Beryllium Hydroxide is an atmospheric hydroxide which dissolves in acids as well as alkalis. The chemical formula of beryllium hydroxide is Be(OH)2. It is white in colour consisting of opaque crystals which are slightly soluble in water. Industrially beryllium hydroxide is formed as a by-product in the extraction of beryllium metal from the ores beryl and bertrandite.
Beryllium is a chemical element which is light, silver-gray, relatively soft metal that is strong but brittle. Beryllium has the highest melting point of the light metals. It displays excellent electrical as well as thermal conductivities and resists attack by concentrated nitric acid, and is nonmagnetic. It has a high permeability to X-rays due to low atomic number. Beryllium occurs in some mineral species, the most significant ones include bertrandite, beryl, chrysoberyl, phenacite, etc.
Beryllium is used mainly as an alloying agent in manufacturing beryllium copper, which is widely used for electrical contacts, springs, spot-welding electrodes, etc. It is also utilized as a structural material in high-speed aircraft, missiles, spacecraft, and communication satellites.
